10 Kitchen Backsplash Ideas

Subway tile has been the standard option for kitchen backsplashes for many years. I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve used it, specified it, and suggested it. However, I’m deliberately stepping away from it as the new year approaches. It’s become predictable, not because it’s horrible. The backsplash should no longer be used as a backdrop filler since kitchens are doing more than ever.

I’m now observing a trend toward surfaces that have an architectural, material-driven, and intentional sense. Designers are treating the backsplash as a panel, a texture, or even doing away with tile entirely in instead of repeating tiny tiles over a wall. Kitchens are becoming less prefabricated and more thoughtful thanks to the use of glass, metal, wood, brick, and created surfaces.

The backsplash directions I’m actually focusing on this year are reflected in the concepts below. They eschew the well-known subway style in favor of emphasizing depth, balance, and how the wall complements the kitchen overall rather than just how it appears alone.
